What Residents Share
I'd been living alone in Bangkok for six years after my husband passed. My daughter kept worrying about me, and honestly, so did I. Moving to Khwan was not easy to decide, but three years on I can say it was the right thing. The meals are good, the staff know me by name, and I have people to share a morning walk with. That sounds simple, but it matters enormously.

My father is not someone who easily accepts help from others. That was my biggest concern — whether he would settle in or feel like he'd lost his independence. What surprised us both was how the community works. He still makes his own decisions, keeps his own hours, and has the cottage garden to himself. The support is there when he wants it, invisible when he doesn't. That balance took some time to find, but they found it.

The food here is better than I cooked for myself — and I was a decent cook. Fresh vegetables from the local markets, proper Thai food made with care. I've gained a little weight, which my doctor seems pleased about. The morning stretching class has become the highlight of my day, which would have surprised me greatly a year ago.

My wife and I moved into the cottage together two years ago. We were nervous — we'd been in our own home for 38 years. Now I can honestly say we're less anxious about the future than we've been in a decade. We have our space, our routines, our garden. And when something needs attention, we don't have to handle it alone.

I visited four communities before choosing Khwan Retreat. The others felt like nice hotels or, worse, hospitals in disguise. Khwan felt like a house that happened to have a lot of people living in it. The staff talk to you like a person, not a patient. The setting among the hills is genuinely beautiful. I do wish there was more variety in the weekly activities, and I've said so — which they seemed to take seriously.

As someone who moved from Europe and spent years in Bangkok, I wasn't sure this kind of community would feel right for me. The language barrier was a small concern, but the staff are patient and many residents speak a little English. What matters more than language is kindness, and that's in plentiful supply. The countryside setting reminds me of home in a way I didn't expect.

How the Transition Looked in Practice
Khun Narinee, 74 — Countryside Living Room
Moved in June 2023 · Duration: 19 months
The Starting Point
Narinee had been living alone in Chiang Mai following the death of her husband. Her daughter, living in the UK, was struggling to manage the distance. Narinee was managing practically but felt increasingly isolated, particularly in the evenings.
What Changed
After a visit arranged by her daughter during a trip back to Thailand, Narinee chose the Countryside Room. Within the first three months she had joined the cooking demonstration group and become a regular at the storytelling circle on Thursday evenings.
Eighteen Months On
Narinee's daughter describes the change as "the one decision we're most glad we made." Narinee says the community has given her more to look forward to than she'd had in years. Her health is stable and her appetite has improved.
Boonrak & Chanittha, 68 & 66 — Independent Cottage
Moved in September 2022 · Duration: 2.5 years
The Starting Point
A couple from Nakhon Ratchasima city, both retired, who found their house increasingly difficult to maintain and their social circle shrinking as friends moved or became less mobile. They were not ready for any kind of assisted living but wanted more community around them.
What Changed
The cottage gave them their private space and garden. Community meals and activities were optional but became a regular part of their week. Chanittha began helping in the handicraft sessions; Boonrak joined the weekly market excursion group and now helps choose produce for the kitchen.
Two Years On
They describe Khwan as "our village." The maintenance burden of their previous home is gone. They're more physically active than before. They've introduced two other couples to the community, both of whom subsequently moved in.
